Palea Fokea beach is the natural continuation of Anavissos beach and is one of the most popular beaches in Attica during the summer. At Palea Fokea beach you can find almost anything (very good facilities) including huge crowds during high season.
This beautiful bay is a sea-side settlement on the southeast part of Attica prefecture.
This spot is the best in Attica for wave-windsurfing and kitesurfing in the winter months. During the summer the place is full of swimmers and kitesurf is not allowed. If you are a windsurfer, in that period you should better visit Anavissos Spot.
Medium Months: March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November
Wind Type: Thermal Winds, Frontal Winds
Best Direction: NE, SW
Main Direction: NE, S, SW
Worst Direction: W, NW, E
Wind Factor: 17-21 knots (5 bft), 22-27 knots (6 bft)
Main Wind Direction: Offshore, Onshore, Side Onshore
Blowing at: Morning, Midday, Afternoon
Wave Tack: Port (from the left)
In summer time north winds ("Meltemi) blow mostly, 15-25 knots, all day long. Offshore gusty conditions. There are many windsurfers, especially in July. There are no thermal winds if temperature is above 38 C° -not common.
In winter time the spot is perfect with S/SW direction wind: onshore conditions, with force many times up to 25 knots.
With W, NW direction the wind is very gusty and very often not blowing at all.
Quality: Crystal Clear
Depth: Shallow (walking several steps not to step on)
Seabed: Sand
Attention: Pieces of concrete, Swimmers
In wintertime, force 5+ bft S to SW wind can make for nice backside turns on the windswell. A veering NW after a few days of strong SW is a real treat, building enough for a couple of hours’ clean down-the-line riding before the wind flattens the sea again.
With NE, flat and chop conditions.
The sea is rather shallow. Be careful when you windsurf with southern winds, you should avoid going in front of the amusement park. Into the water and close to the beach there are big, broken pieces of concrete. Along with the wave is very likely to get hurt or break your equipment.
Size: Big
Bathers Period: May, June, July, August, September
Bathers: Much
Shade: Average
Kid Friendly: Yes
Attention:
It is a safe bay, ideal especially for beginners provided you do not go far from the hotel.
The wide, sandy beach is surrounded by tall pine trees and a lush green environment that create a peaceful landscape in combination with the crystal clear waters. During the summer, in the weekends the beach attracts many people and gets crowded.
Palea Fokea is located on the Saronic Gulf coast, in the southwestern part of the Attica peninsula.
Arrival by Airplane: The new airport of Athens “Eleftherios Venizelos”, one of the best airports in Europe, (IATA: ATH, ICAO: LGAV) is located in Spata Town and serves flights to Greece daily from several international airlines from all over the world. You can take a charter flight, so you can carry your windsurf equipment with you as well.
The metro and the Proastiakos-Suburban railway, as well as taxis and buses to and from Athens are to be found opposite the main exit of the airport. The distance is 44 km. The bus journey takes between 35 and 45 minutes to the city centre at Syntagma (Parliament) Square (of course depending on the time and traffic), therefore the best way is to take the “Athens metro” that connects the airport with Athens and Piraeus. There are car hire agencies at the airport, in case you want to rent a vehicle.
If you want to go directly to Palea Fokea by car or taxi, the airport is 36 km away, with quick and easy access.
Arrival by Ferry / Boat: If you are coming from the European continent and you prefer to take the ferry from an Italian Port, you need to head towards Italy and the Italian ports of Ancona, Venice Bari or Brindisi. Those ports have daily connections to Corfu, Igoumenitsa and Patras. If you are coming from Aegean Sea (from a Greek Island, Turkey or Cyprus) you will reach one of the Attica’s Ports in Piraeus, Rafina or Lavrio Town.
Arrival by Car, Moto, Camper Van: If you’re coming by Ferry from an Italian port, Patra is about 211 km away from the center of Athens and Igoumenitsa is about 445 km. There are some good highways a like the Corinth-Athens and the Athens-Larissa, Corinth-Tripoli and the Egnatia highway. Palea Fokea is about 45 km away from Athens and Piraeus (Greek National Road 91: Athens – Sounio) passes through the town), 50 km from Rafina and 15 km from Lavrio. If you come from Thessaloniki -Greece's second largest city- the distance is about 544 km till Athens center.
Arrival by Bus: Coach Services are operated by KTEL between almost every town, all year long. If you’re already to Athens, there are several bus routes available to Palea Fokea with urban bus lines (within Athens center) and with suburban bus lines.
Arrival by Train: Train travel is not so much in fashion anymore due to the complexity of the journey through the Balkans. Rail services link Thessaloniki with, Athens, Thrace and Patra. The line through what was once Yugoslavia provides connections with Central and Western Europe. The line through Bulgaria connects to Eastern Europe and the line through Istanbul, Turkey with the countries of the Near East.
If you to come to Attica by train, you can get the metro Line 2 from “Stathmos Larissis” station.
