Paleo Faliro is a bay of the Saronic Gulf. It has 3 beaches (Flisvos, Batis, Edem) that are practically inside the city.
The positive thing with this spot is that you can get there in no time, as the beautiful sandy beach is located just 20 minutes (10 km) away from the center of Athens, by using the public transportation. The negative is that the same thing applies for everyone else, so during summertime expect huge crowds of swimmers and sunbathers.
If the wind is not very strong, the weather conditions here are usually nice even for beginners wind and kitesurfers. So it's worth trying surfing at Paleo Faliro when it is less crowded.

NW wind produces moderate wave conditions, although neither wind nor waves are reliable and they can soon drop off. Usually it’s gusty. Some better conditions with W in March and April, after 12:00.
This spot is an alternative choice for those who live in Athens and they cannot go to the Corinthian Gulf when strong western wind blows.
Also nice sessions with strong southern wind, but these days are even rarer. If you are a kitesurfer, Schinias (Forest) is much better spot.
Quality: Unsuitable
Depth: Average (deepens gently and incrementally)
Seabed: Sand, Rocks
Attention: Swimmers
Wavy conditions with western conditions, if the wind it’s strong it’s not ideal for beginners.
There are always several people bobbing around in the water, especially in summer months, but most stay on the sand. The water is not very clean. There is visible garbage floating on the surface of the water.

Attention:
The seaside area was redeveloped for the 2004 Summer Olympics, and now contains a seaside promenade, several sports venues, a marina and the Park of Maritime Tradition, where museum ships are exhibited. The road noise does not contribute to a positive beach experience.
The palm trees give an exotic touch to the area. There are swimmers in the area all year, because of the area’s “Winter Swimmers’ Association”.
Paleo Faliro is situated at a distance of some 10 kilometers southwestern to the center of Athens; it is the closest beach to the city center.
Arrival by Airplane: The new airport of Athens “Eleftherios Venizelos”, one of the best airports in Europe, (IATA: ATH, ICAO: LGAV) is located in Spata Town and serves flights to Greece daily from several international airlines from all over the world. You can take a charter flight, so you can carry your windsurf equipment with you as well.
The metro and the Proastiakos-Suburban railway, as well as taxis and buses to and from Athens are to be found opposite the main exit of the airport. The distance is 44 km. The bus journey takes between 35 and 45 minutes to the city centre at Syntagma (Parliament) Square (of course depending on the time and traffic), therefore the best way is to take the “Athens metro” that connects the airport with Athens and Piraeus. There are car hire agencies at the airport, in case you want to rent a vehicle.
In case you want to go directly to Paleo Faliro by car or taxi, the airport is 52 km away.
Arrival by Ferry / Boat: If you are coming from the European continent and you prefer to take the ferry from an Italian Port, you need to head towards Italy and the Italian ports of Ancona, Venice Bari or Brindisi. Those ports have daily connections to Corfu, Igoumenitsa and Patras. If you are coming from Aegean Sea (from a Greek Island, Turkey or Cyprus) you will reach one of the Attica’s Ports in Piraeus, Rafina or Lavrio Town.
Arrival by Car, Moto, Camper Van: If you’re coming by Ferry from an Italian port, Patra is about 211 km away from the center of Athens and Igoumenitsa is about 445 km. There are some good highways a like the Corinth-Athens and the Athens-Larissa, Corinth-Tripoli and the Egnatia highway.
Paleo Faliro is about 10 km away from Athens through Syggrou Avenue that merges with Poseidonos Avenue (Poseidonos Avenue is the main highway along the coast). Also it is 8 km away from Piraeus, 49 km from Rafina and 77 km from Lavrio. If you come from Thessaloniki -Greece's second largest city- the distance is about 511 km till Athens center.
Arrival by Bus/Tram: Access to the beach is easy by plenty public buses, running frequently. The best way to arrive to the beach is the tramway; it is easy, comfortable and above all environment-friendly. You can stop at “Batis” or “Edem” stops.
Arrival by Metro/Train: Train travel is not so much in fashion anymore due to the complexity of the journey through the Balkans. Rail services link Thessaloniki with, Athens, Thrace and Patra. The line through what was once Yugoslavia provides connections with Central and Western Europe. The line through Bulgaria connects to Eastern Europe and the line through Istanbul, Turkey with the countries of the Near East.
If you’re already in Attica, the tram can be used as connection station to the metro station "Neos Kosmos". The Central Railway Station is only 20 minutes away (12 km) by car but can also be accessed by taking the metro ("Stathmos Larissis" metro stop).
