Access to Platis Gialos:

Platis Gialos is 7 km northwest of Pothia, so you can take a taxi or the local bus. It is close to the airport.

Access to Kalymnos:

Arrival by Airplane: This Island is connected by air to the Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos", the largest airport in Greece, since 2006. One or two direct flights (depending on season) are run daily towards and from Athens. The duration of the flight is approximately 50 minutes. The airport of Kalymnos lies near Argos, at a 10-15 minutes’ distance from the island's capital, Pothia.

During the summer season, there are scheduled bus trips that connect the airport with the villages Massouri, Myrties, Emborios and Vathy. Alternatively, you can call a taxi or, in case there is no taxi waiting at the airport, stop one on the street. Kalymnos airport has an outdoor parking and facilities for the disabled.

Another approach for reaching Kalymnos by air is taking a flight from Athens to the neighboring island Kos. Between April and October, all major European airports offer charter flights to Kos. It is probably the most economic and fastest solution. After landing at the International Airport of Kos 'Hippocrates', you should go to the harbor of Mastichari Village. In there, you will board on a speedboat or a conventional ferry boat that will take you to Kalymnos' Pothia. The route between the two islands lasts from 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the type of vessel you board on.

Arrival by Ferry/Boat: There are many options available if you choose to reach to Kalymnos by boat, since the island is directly connected with regular itineraries with the ports of Piraeus and other Dodecanese islands (Kos, Leros, Patmos, Lipsi and Astipalea). Routes from the port of Piraeus run almost daily and last 9 to 12 hours, depending on stops and the weather conditions. Alternatively, there are frequent itineraries from the port of Mastichari (Kos) performed by speedboats and conventional ferry boat, which will bring you to Kalymnos after a 20-45 minute ride.

For those who start from the north part of Greece, there is the choice of using the sea route Thessaloniki - Kalymnos, with stopovers in Lesvos, Chios and Samos Islands. Bear in mind however, that this route is not run every year, so it would be wise to consult the shipping companies or the Ministry of Merchant Marine before traveling. 

In brief, Kalymnos is connected by sea with the following islands: Dodecanese:  Agathonisi, Astipalea, Kastellorizo, Kos, Leros, Lipsi, Nisyros, Patmos, Pserimos, Rhodes, Symi, Tilos, Cyclades: Amorgos, Mykonos, Syros, North Aegean islands (in some cases): Lesbos, Chios, and Samos.

In case of adverse weather conditions: Sometimes in the winter, if there are bad weather conditions or very strong winds, the Port Authorities may issue a Departure Prohibition Order and flights might be delayed or even cancelled. If the weather forecasts predict winds of over 7 Beaufort strong, then be sure that the Port Authority will issue a Departure Prohibition Order. In such cases, you can look for the port "Kypreos," a dock that you will see on your right as you enter the main port of Pothia. Over there, you will find small boats that travel to and from Kos, even if a Departure Prohibition Order has been issued for larger boats or flying dolphins. From Kos Island you can get the first available flight to your final destination.

Local transportations:  There are several ways to move around in Kalymnos. The local buses will take you to the key points of the island, but in case you prefer more autonomy you can hire a car, a motorbike or even a bicycle. Finally, the taxis operating on the island can serve you any time you need a transfer.
