Prasonisi (is the Greek word for “Green Island”) is a small wind haven at the very far south of the Island of Rhodes. Set against a backdrop of green cultivated fields and soft rolling hills, the sea at Prasonisi is a dramatic contrast, with a mix of deeper blue water and white foaming waves.

The area is famous not only for its excellent geographical location, but also for its strong and stable "Meltemi" northern wind and for the unique coast line making it possible to sail in diametrically different conditions in two different seas; the west side of the Aegean and the beautifully with the calm blue waters of the Mediterranean on the east.

It’s 2 in 1 spot, one wavy and another completely flat. These factors make it the ideal resort for those who want to spend as much time on the water as possible as that is the only reason people stay here. Thousands of windsurfers and kitesurfers visit Prasonisi, both at beginner and advanced level.

The spot is known for its very reliable winds and also for the stronger -compared to all other spots on Rhodes. That's because of the NW “Meltemi” wind that blows across the whole Mediterranean in the summer. Also, due to the local topography, the wind funnels through the island opposite Prasonisi and the large hill behind it, so the spot usually has a force stronger than elsewhere on the island.

On July and August the average daily wind speed is 15 to 30 knots (4 to 7 Bft). There are only about 3-4 windless days per month. In the middle-season (May/June and September/October), the wind is often weaker. Windless days may be around one week per month.

Strong offshore flat water speed sailing and radical onshore wave sailing, over the sandbank.

The wind here seems to be dominated by local effects so the windguru forecast doesn't bear much relation to the actual conditions. For sure count 5-10 knots more than the forecast. Best conditions early in the morning and late in the afternoon.

Attention:

During the summer months the spot is overcrowding and you have to be patience. There is no specific kiting area on either of the sides. The beach shelves very gently on both sides with soft sand under foot and shallow for about 20 m. The sea bed is sandy. Sea urchins are only found close to the rocks.

West: The sandbar creates waves which are between 1-2 m and can be more on big days. The average height of the waves is slightly less than one meter. The waves break in a distance of about 50 to 100 m from the beach. As along the sand bar there is a 20 m wide strip, it is shallow enough to stand in for training. This venue is best for competent sailors, although a powerful safety boat is on standby should you need assistance. Sometimes you can find seaweed.

East: Perfect speed area. Not a good idea for kitesurf here, prefer the less busy time to get at this side.

The water quality is excellent. The water temperatures are: May: 21°C, Jun: 23°C,Aug: 27°C, Oct 23°C.

Prasonisi is located near an island that joins with the mainland through a sandy "corridor". During summer time, and when water levels are low enough, this thin strip of sand links the peninsula with Rhodes, dividing the sea into two. During the winter time, and when water levels are high enough, peninsula becomes an island. So, Prasonisi sailing area basically consists of 2 large bays backing onto one another, around 500-600 m, with the wind blowing directly across the sandy beach between them.

In summer there are many cars and visitors, but there is space for everyone. Flat area is mostly only windsurfers.

Unfortunately, sometimes there is some waste, mostly left behind by the visitors.

Access to Prasonisi: Once arrived at the airport, you have to get to Prasonisi. The airport is located in the north of the island, while Prasonisi is in the south. The distance from the airport to Prasonisi is about 94 km (approximately a 1 and a half hour drive). There are four possibilities to get to Prasonisi:

By Rental Car: This is the most relaxed way, especially if your accommodation is not in Prasonisi or you want to visit other places on the island. Route to Prasonisi: The best route is via Faliraki. At the airport exit, turn to the left towards Rhodes Town, and then follow the signs to Faliraki. From there, drive to the south along the east coast.

By Taxi: In front of the airport building, waiting taxis can be found around the clock. You should discuss the price before the ride. Taxis usually do not have roof racks. Windsurfing equipment can be difficult to transport. Transporting the boards directly on the roof (a popular method on Rhodes when using a rental car) is hardly accepted. Special taxis with roof racks can be ordered for an extra charge. It also may take some time to get such a taxi.

By Bus: Public buses are the cheapest, but also the most time consuming way to get to Prasonisi. First, one must get to the bus station. This is the East Side Bus Station at Rimini Square in Rhodes Town. Other bus stations are very close; do not mix-up. The connections to Prasonisi are operated by the company KTEL.

Access to Rhodes: The cheapest and fastest way to get to Rhodes is a flight to Rhodes International Airport. Other ways, such as flights via Athens, other islands or Turkey, possibly combined with ferries, are time consuming and usually more expensive.

Arrival by Airplane: Located in the eastern Aegean Sea, Rhodes’ International Airport “Diagoras” (RHO) is one of the biggest airports in Greece and the 4th busiest. It is situated on the west coast of the island, about 14 km from Rhodes Town. It is the main entrance exit point for both locals and tourists. During high season these can reach 150-180 movements per day -the airport parking area is small.

Domestic flights connect the island of Rhodes very frequently from all the major Greek airports. Most flights arrive from Athens (ATH), Thessaloniki (SKG) and Heraklion (HER). However there are flights from smaller airports as well. Many chartered flights come directly to Diagoras airport (RHO) from almost every European capital. (Bergamo, Bournemouth, Milan, Frankfurt-Hahn, Pisa, Kaunas and Rome, Amsterdam etc.).

Arrival by Ferry/Boat: There is daily connection with the largest port of Greece, Piraeus. The trip lasts 11-14 hours depending on the boat. There is also a ferry from Thessaloniki once every week. Rhodes is also accessible via ferry from Symi and Tilos Greek Islands, but also via Bodrum, Fethiye, Datca and Marmaris in Turkey. Cruise ships dock at the Commercial Port, east of Rhodes (city)'s Old Town.

Arrival by Car: It is not worth the hassle to bring your own car to the island, although it is in theory possible. You can rent a car at the airport or via any hotel and at many local dealers. Local dealers are the best option for renting a car on the island, the services provided by some of the companies is outstanding. They can give you all the insider tips you will need so your road trips around will give you the possibility to discover all the natural beauties and enjoy your visits to the endless archaeological sites and places of interest on the island.

Asphalt highways will allow you to reach the entire island, especially the last couple of years the road system is improved a lot!

Arrival by Motorcycle: Motorbikes and mopeds are popular alternatives to cars. Especially mopeds are frequently used by local youths and can go to many places that cars cannot go - for example the twisted narrow streets of Rhodes city. If you start a day-trip with a moped, make you sure you do so on a full tank, as gas stations are sometimes hard to find.

Arrival by Bus: All public bus lines radiate from Rhodes town and reach almost every relevant place throughout the island. The main bus terminal in Rhodes city is the Nea Agora (New Market). Buses run by both companies stop there, but ticket booths, as well as timetables and prices, are distinct. Rhodes town lines are run by Roda, but have a separate stop, along Mandraki sea promenade, across the street from the new market. Tickets can also be bought in the bus from a cashier or directly from the driver. Keep your ticket until the end of your voyage. The price of a bus ticket will depend on the destination.

Bus stops on the road are marked by a sign, but do not hesitate to signal a bus driver that you wish to board. Only part of the bus stops have the timetables displayed, and the buses are often late. Also, note that most villages and resorts have more than one line passing through and stopping in different places.

Arrival by Taxi: Taxis on Rhodes are dark blue with white roofs. There is a list of expected maximum taxi charges you can obtain from the tourist information office. Never let the driver turn off the meter. You can radio a taxi via telephone number. This adds a standard surcharge. Between midnight and 05:00 am you will have to pay twice the normal rates. You can book ahead to avoid delays at high traffic times such as weekends. Within Rhodes city limits, fixed rates are applied.
